<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Join us Saturday, September 22nd for the opening reception of The Sewing Circle at Seaver Gallery, from 5 - 8 pm. The exhibition features new work by ten artists in Los Angeles. The artists included in the show are Lavialle Campbell, Rebecca Campbell, Phung Huynh, Laura Krifka, Tidawhitney Lek, Siobhan McClure, Stephanie Mercado, Andrea Patrie and Kate Savage.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Stephanie Mercado will have three new monoprints included in the exhibition. The monoprints are constructed using relief and linocut prints, hand-cut and collaged together to create innovative narratives.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Painting a family portrait is an intimate and challenging subject, especially if one is not a photo-realist painter. It requires care and attention to paint portraits that resemble one's image while balancing the characteristic's of one's style of painting. I just finished a commission for a family of eight (plus). The painting has more than eight figures, it has each family member depicted more than once, extended family members, and a dog. The piece has thirty-eight figures total. Some of them are depicted as portraits in the background, a reference to fond memories hovering over what resembles a family tree.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I wanted to stay away from painting a traditional family portrait. I was not interested in replicating a photo that could be easily captured in a photo booth. The piece has been a journey and the process included breakfast with the family, viewing and collecting family photos, listening to some of their favorite memories and becoming enamored with the sense of humor of the youngest set of twins.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I started off with simple line drawings from their photos. I scanned them on to my computer, moved them around, and scaled them up and down. I instinctively new that their home was the ideal environment in which to place them. Their home was welcoming, and the eldest twin girls mentioned one of their favorite things to do is to sing and dance in the kitchen. The sentiment was perfect.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I made several digital sketches, dropping in accent colors here and there. Once I had an idea about composition and color palette, I began to draw the image to the canvas.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Transferring the image to the canvas is different from working digitally. I had to change my approach to the piece and ditch the digital sketch.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The perspective changes within the picture plane, creating opportunities for inventiveness. From left to right, the family dines in their dining room, watching themselves perform for a camera where their parents capture memories on film. In the foreground, the youngest twins draw their own version of their family portrait, while their dog Frida keeps them company. The painting is full of symbolism, subtly referencing the memories they shared with me when they welcomed me to their home. Painting this family's portrait has been an experience that I will never forget.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You may see an image of the painting here: Portrait of a Family
This year’s juror is Gabriela Martinez, Curator of Education at the Museum of Latin American Art in Los Angeles, California. Out of 212 entries she chose 44, making Retellings our most competitive juried show to date. Her selection represents artists from 23 cities and 12 states. The exhibition will also feature work by Martinez and invited artists Sheila Rodriguez (Long Beach, CA), Silvya Manquero (Los Angeles, CA), Stephanie Mercado (Los Angeles, CA), Raúl Gonzalez (Boston, MA), and Rogelio Gutierrez (Tempe, AZ).

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">House Floating at Sea, 2011, after the tsunami struck Japan

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The first time I painted a house floating at Sea, I found it absurd. Although it was poetic, I thought to myself, "what are the odds that this could be possible, it would sink before anyone could have a moment to capture this image on camera or witness it first hand". Apparently, I was wrong. When I saw the photo online, of a house floating at sea after the tsunami hit Japan in 2011 I was not only amazed, but I was also in disbelief. By then, I had made several works of objects floating in the ocean. The ocean series I was working on at the time had come from a body of work in which I was working with maps. Cartography became an important element in the work because for me, it personified real-estate, imperialism and man's long-lasting pursuit of new horizons or a better life somewhere abroad. In other words, it was another element of the American Dream theme that has been a consistent part of my work. The ocean and objects floating at sea became symbolic of our relationship to the Earth and questioned the significance of our materialistic pursuits. Suddenly everything I ever wanted could be thrown in the ocean and the desire to pursue those things became absurd. I began to re-evaluate our relationship to nature and to question the importance of the things that we seek.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When I saw the image of Jane's Carousel surrounded by water, I was speechless. I was positive when I had made the piece that the image I had created could never become a reality. Again, I was wrong. Although it is exciting to see that my work is not as surreal as people have claimed, it is also rather frightening. I promise not to make any work foreseeing an apocalypse.
